Nemesis & the Swan caught my attention because of the cover & when I read that it was set in historical France (mainly Paris) I just had to read it! Hélène’s story was incredibly emotional but the book was still a relaxing read, something that I needed at the time. This book is written really well & it completely consumed me.
I received a digital copy of this book via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
⚠️ This book contains sexism, a small amount of racism, classism, scenes of a sexual nature, sexual assault, domestic violence, attempted suicide, murder, hangings, arson, riots, gun use, mental health conditions & death of a child (referred to in a memory) ⚠️
I fell in love with this chonk of a book pretty quickly, & as I turned each page I just became more & more obsessed with Caro & I slowly felt myself becoming almost as determined as she was to solve a murder. I don’t read a lot of mystery books but when I do they have to have female leads like Caro & they must be set in the past, & I always end up loving them. Daughters of Night was incredible & left me pondering why I don’t own more books like it.
I was sent a copy of this book by the publisher in return for an honest review.
⚠️ Graphic violence, murder, anti-semitism, abortion, sexism, homophobic slurs/attitudes, scenes of a sexual nature, rape & other adult themes ⚠️
As I recently discovered a nail varnish that is a stunning TARDIS blue I just had to do a #BookishNails recommendation! The colour of this varnish is actually called Sonic Blue, instead of TARDIS blue, but there’s absolutely NO freakin’ way that that’s just a coincidence because it’s definitely the colour of the TARDIS (but obviously they can’t call it that). The varnish is by COLLECTION as part of the 7 Day Wear line, & is number 23; I only needed two coats for this colour to look great & I’m really happy with its durability. As always, I used Nail Growth Miracle as a base coat & an Insta-Dry top coat (both by Sally Hansen). I love this colour & it’s definitely one of my favourites.
I’ve wanted to get my hands on David Solomons’ two middlegrade Doctor Who books ever since they were released & I finally! did. And honestly, I was blown away by how good they both were. Both books left me with a massive smile on my face & I really hope that David is asked to write more middlegrade DW books because they were just so. blooming. good!
Keep an eye out for a TARDIS blue nail varnish post later today!
⚠️ A little bit of very mild, typical Doctor Who violence ⚠️
In July I had a university deadline so I didn’t read quite as much as I did in June; the books I did get through though, were all brilliant & I managed to read a variety of stories as well. July was also the month my blog came back to life & I think it’s done quite well considering it was dormant for almost six months (even if I’ve not stuck to my schedule quite as well as I wanted to, oops). Whether you’re someone who has been following me for a while, or you’re new here, thank you for taking the time to support my writing.
It didn’t take long for me to be interested in this story; interested in the background, interested in where it was going & interested in how it would work. Laura has written a beautiful story about humanity, impossible choices & the magic of the universe we reside in. I absolutely recommend you pick it up immediately.
I received a e-copy of this book via NetGalley in return for a review, however I didn’t read it until I had my own hardback in my hands.
⚠️ Flashbacks to a house fire, deaths of parents, a very openly sexist Earth, discussions/references of off-page homophobia & racism, miscarriages, laws against abortion, violence, references to a global pandemic (eeek) & very real, hard hitting facts about global warming & human suffering ⚠️
For my first #BookishNails post I chose The Veiled Duchess & Wine Stock (480) Miracle Gel (no light needed) by Sally Hansen. I chose this nail colour as it is incredibly similar to the sails on The Duchess from Sophia Menesini’s fantastic pirate series & I loved having a part of this story with me every where I went. This nail colour goes on really well with only two coats & I used Nail Growth Miracle base coat with Insta-Dry top coat, both of which are by Sally Hansen. I love this colour a lot & definitely recommend it.
Last Halloween I actually left the house to do something social, but there was no way I was going without SOMETHING bookish – so I chose to don some ears & become an elf, just like Pirate Captain, Shae Lara. So, you could say I like this series. But really, I absolutely f’ing love this series & I command all of you to stop what you’re doing (after you’ve read my review of course) & read Sophia’s work immediately.
Keep an eye out for a bookish nails post later today!
I was sent a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.
⚠️ This book contains slavery of a fantasy race, graphic violence (a bit of gore), death, graphic sex scenes, parental death, suicide/assisted dying, graphic sword fighting & some drowning ⚠️
I’ve loved every one of Zoë’s previous books that I’ve read, especially Shadows on the Moon (which is one of my favourite ever books for it’s mental health & self-harm representation), so when I found out she was releasing a retelling of The Little Mermaid I was ecstatic! And Zoë did not disappoint – this is the most original retelling of the story I’ve ever read & I absolutely loved it!

⚠️ This story includes shipwrecks, drowning, seizures, anxiety, aggressive animals, off-page hunting, a form of modern slavery & gun use ⚠️
Before starting Dangerous Remedy I hadn’t read a YA story for a while, so when my long-awaited Illumicrate edition arrived I was beyond excited! This story is set a part of history I don’t know much about & I loved running around Paris with The Battalion of the Dead. I’m heartbroken about having to wait so long for book two!
⚠️ Scientific experiments on unwilling participants, violence (including the use of weapons), references to off-page homophobia, threats of sexual violence, deaths of family members (on- & off-page) & lots of graphic guillotine action ⚠️
