When Time Lord Victorious was first announced I was disappointed that more recent Doctors were not part of the story – namely the 12th and 13th Doctors – but with Steve Cole & Una McCormack being the writers of these brand new novels, I just had to give them a go. And, to be honest, they did an awesome job; I loved being able to explore The Dark Times, a period of history that we’ve been teased about for years, & it was fantastic to have more of Nine as well! I’m definitely excited to explore more of this story in the comics and DW magazine!
In The Vanisher’s Palace took me a little by surprise because the cover misled me into thinking this was a middlegrade story – it is not a middlegrade story!! Nevertheless, I did rather enjoy this strange little novella & I when I finished it I was incredibly disappointed that it had not been longer; I’ve not read any of Aliette’s other work but I think I may have to now, just to get some more weirdness on my shelves.
⚠️ Violence, sexual themes & surgical scenes ⚠️
Winter, White & Wicked is a fresh take on the classic YA quest-trope, with most of the story taking place within the cab of a ice-rig! Add in a kickass driver & a trio of misfits, exciting magic & an icy setting, & you’ve got yourself a winner. I genuinely could have stayed on this journey for days longer than I did & I’m super excited about where the series is going!
I was sent a copy a copy of this book via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
⚠️ This book contains addition, violence, torture, murder, kidnap, gun use, fighting/killing animals (wolves), a form of slavery & death of family members. There is also one scene including, & a few passages describing of the memory of, an attempted rape of a child, which her guardian allows. ⚠️
I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this story & how devastated I was to discover that it’s a stand alone! The story kicked off at record speeds, I became obsessed with every magical detail, both protagonists were great fun to follow, & when things got tough towards the end, my heart was racing.
I enjoyed this book so much, & I’m so obsessed with the cover that I did a #BookishNails look for it which you will able to find here from 7pm today!
⚠️ This book contains murder, gory fights & medical scenes, classism, surgical scenes, sibling deaths, beheading, references to child neglect/abuse, discussions of drowning, medical neglect & manipulation & a government pushing heteronormativity ⚠️
I always feel a little strange reviewing (auto)biographies because it’s almost like I’m reviewing someone’s life, however this book hit me so hard that I felt that I needed to write something about it. This is such a beautiful & unique book in which Lisa Taddeo has documented the lives of three very real women – & somehow, whilst doing so, she has managed to explore experiences that all women readers will feel some kind of connection to, & there really are no words to express how magical that is.
⚠️ This book is about the lives of three real women & covers the following topics: alcoholic parents, drug use, very detailed sex scenes, eating disorders, car crashes, depression, suicide & the death of a parent ⚠️
⚠️ Additionally, the following sexual abuse/violence are featured in the book: grooming by a teacher leading to a sexual assault; a man in his 30s taking advantage of a 16-year-old girl; a teenage girl raped by three teenage boys whilst drunk ⚠️
I was really excited to read The Girl King so I’m really sad that it was a bit of a flop for me. I loved the ending but the rest of the book just didn’t really do it for me due to slow pacing & not enough world-building.
⚠️ Violence, gory sword fights, murder, animal slaughter, parental death/murder, hunting, genocide of a fictional community, imprisonments in labour camps, discussions of infertility & panic attacks (secondary character) ⚠️
I was incredibly excited to get my hands on this book & I ended up being completely blown away by it; with natural, well-paced & inviting writing, Dee Garretson has created a moving story that presents a realistic & well-balanced view of the Russian revolution. I absolutely loved this book, as well as main character Charlotte, & I was so sad when I finished the final page.
I was sent a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.
⚠️ This book contains war themes such as gun use, violence & arson, as well as classism, sexism, violent riots & a lot of death. There is also references to the death of a parent that occurs before the book is set. ⚠️
Yet another fantasy world created within the mind of Mary Fan, & what a fantasy world it is! The Edge of Evil progresses mostly at a steady pace, but as you delve further into the world, & the book, the stakes gradually increase & by the end I was completely hooked. If you’ve not dived into one of Mary’s books yet, you absolutely must – she’s one of the best writers in YA fantasy right now (& my favourite author).
⚠️ This book contains a death of a parent, violence, discrimination, as well as gun & bomb use ⚠️
As soon as I started this story a magical aura surrounded me & I felt like I was a little girl being read a bedtime story; I fell completely in love with The Ice Bear Miracle & reading it was a spellbinding experience. This book is made of magic, I’m sure of it, & I think it would make a beautiful audiobook as well.
⚠️ This book contains animals being forced to perform
& animals being hurt by humans ⚠️
It shouldn’t be news to any long-time followers that Mary Fan is my favourite author, & once again she has written something that I love. I’m so excited that Windborn is a start of a new series, because it will help heal my heart now that the Starswept series has concluded. I really liked this steady opening to what feels like a powerful series & I cannot wait for more!
I was sent this book by the author in return for an honest review.
⚠️ This book contains scenes of magical torture, mild violence & gore, false imprisonment, modern slavery(?) & distanced families ⚠️
