Goldilocks by Laura Lam

GoldilocksIt didnโ€™t take long for me to be interested in this story; interested in the background, interested in where it was going & interested in how it would work. Laura has writtenย a beautiful story about humanity, impossible choices & the magic of the universe we reside in. I absolutely recommend you pick it up immediately.

I received a e-copy of this book via NetGalley in return for a review, however I didnโ€™t read it until I had my own hardback in my hands.

โš ๏ธ Flashbacks to a house fire, deaths of parents, a very openly sexist Earth, discussions/references of off-page homophobia & racism, miscarriages, laws against abortion, violence, references to a global pandemic (eeek) & very real, hard hitting facts about global warming & human suffering โš ๏ธ

Bookish Nails: The Veiled Duchess

Nail Varnish PhotographFor my first #BookishNails post I chose The Veiled Duchess & Wine Stock (480) Miracle Gel (no light needed) by Sally Hansen. I chose this nail colour as it is incredibly similar to the sails on The Duchess from Sophia Menesini’s fantastic pirate series & I loved having a part of this story with me every where I went. This nail colour goes on really well with only two coats & I used Nail Growth Miracle base coat with Insta-Dry top coat, both of which are by Sally Hansen. I love this colour a lot & definitely recommend it.

The Veiled Descendants by Sophia Menesini

8f649c01-7f07-432b-9ba5-320654a3e2a4Last Halloween I actually left the house to do something social, but there was no way I was going without SOMETHING bookish – so I chose to don some ears & become an elf, just like Pirate Captain, Shae Lara. So, you could say I like this series. But really, I absolutely f’ing love this series & I command all of you to stop what you’re doing (after you’ve read my review of course) & read Sophia’s work immediately.

The Book of Snow & Silence by Zoรซ Marriott

The Book of Snow & Silence
I’ve loved every one of Zoรซ’s previous books that I’ve read, especially Shadows on the Moon (which is one of my favourite ever books for it’s mental health & self-harm representation), so when I found out she was releasing a retelling of The Little Mermaid I was ecstatic! And Zoรซ did not disappoint – this is the most original retelling of the story I’ve ever read & I absolutely lovedย it!

Dangerous Remedy by Kat Dunn

Dangerous Remedy

Before starting Dangerous Remedy I hadn’t read a YA story for a while, so when my long-awaited Illumicrate edition arrived I was beyond excited! This story is set a part of history I don’t know much about & I loved running around Paris with The Battalion of the Dead. I’m heartbroken about having to wait so long for book two!

Victoria’s War by Catherine A. Hamilton

Victoria's WarThis was a very hard book to read for all of the obvious reasons, but for me, reading about a (German) disabled character during the war was a special experience, & one which totally broke my heart. This book is full of a lot of sadness, but also highlights the strength of those who lived through the war & those who fought against the Nazi regime, both in the tiniest of ways & the biggest.

Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko

Raybearer

Raybearer is the start of a debut series by a strong & enchanting voice; Jordan Ifueko has created magic within these pages & has produced a book that I found completely impossible to put down. Publishers need to be supporting more authors of colour like Jordan, because books like this absolutely raise the bar in YA fantasy.

Tales of Lunis Aquaria by Tessa Hastjarjanto

Tales of Lunis Aquaria

This review shall be short & sweet as this book is a compilation of short stories all written by Tessa Hastjarjanto; I really enjoyed the magic of these stories & I really hope there’s another volume released soon. Tessa’s writing is calming & warm, & I can’t wait to read more of her work.

The Black Archive: Face the Raven by Sarah Groenewegen

Face the RavenGoing into this book, I wasn’t sure what I was going to get – I knew it was some sort of write up about one of my favourite Doctor Who episodes, but that was it. As it turns out, this series is a collection of academic-type analyses of a selection of Doctor Who episodes & reading such an in-depth exploration about Clara Oswald’s life & death was such a brilliant experience for me. I want every book in the series immediately!!

Mermaid Moon by Susann Cokal

Mermaid Moon

I ordered this book because it sounded interesting, but mainly because it’s gorgeous, even without it’s clothes on – look at it!! But it’s also gorgeous inside too; the story felt fresh & unique, with great writing & brilliant world-building. How is this not being spoken about more? It’s gone straight to the top of my favourites list!
