I didn’t in a million years think that Rothana could top Halayda as much as it did – I’ve never been so wrong. Everything I thought I knew about this world & it’s characters has been thrown into question & all I know is that I’m dying for the final book in the series.
You can find my review of the first book in the series, Halayda, here.
I was sent this book by the publisher in return for an honest review.
A new queen falls. A death lord rises. An ancient foe looms in the shadows.
Sylvie Imanthiya is desperate to lead Faerie well and deepen the bond with her husband, former king Taylan Ashkalabek. But all hope of that vanishes when the winter solstice ceremony ends in disaster, stranding her and Taylan in the Deathrealm, and stripping the kingdom from her.
With Faerie in chaos, Zad and Diza are separated once again: Zad to reconcile with an old mentor to stabilize the kingdom, and Diza to confront the nefarious Casimir in the mortal realm. But Casimir claims that a greater evil seeks to destroy both realms, an evil that Diza’s unique death magic can hold at bay—if she could only remember how.
In the Deathrealm, Taylan is succumbing to the lure of specters from his past, and pushing away Sylvie’s love. Overwhelmed by decay and darkness, Sylvie must summon unexpected magic from the soul of Kyure to fight for her convictions and her husband’s heart.
Shadows divide them. Their friends are in peril. If Sylvie fails, her marriage and her world will fall.
When you love a book as much as I loved Rothana, writing a review feels near-on impossible; how do I even begin to explain how much this book pulls on my heart, leaves me on the edge of my seat & makes my soul desperate for more? I can’t. I just can’t. You have to read this book.
Okay. Breath in & out, in & out, in & out…
As soon as I picked up Rothana it was like I’d been thrown back into it’s universe via an incredibly powerful portal… I was immersed in the magic, the darkness, the mystery & the rawness of the characters, community & political system of Kyure without even thinking about it… I was back, & I never wanted to leave again.
Halayda was a book that was a mixture of light & darkness, but the genuine goodness in main characters Sylvie & Diza made the whole story glow with purity; in Rothana all of that purity has been obliterated & what’s left is an impenetrable darkness. Everything in the world of Kyure is falling apart, leaving countless questions & mysteries behind. I hated seeing Sylvie & Diza, as well as their husbands & friends, struggle so much to keep their heads above the evilness that has taken over their world & my whole being was desperate to see them all come out the other side. And they did, because Sarah is much more clever than to just kill off her characters – she shatters your heart in unique & unimaginable ways.
I thought that Halayda was hard to put down, but with Rothana it was impossible! There is so much tension sewn into the twisting plot, that it totally breaks your heart & leaves your mind in disarray. Two of the character arcs that were so carefully laid down in the first book, are turned on their heads in the second, & it makes it so hard to take everything else at face value. The way Sarah has destroyed her own work with new pasts & intentions is vastly intelligent & I just can’t get my head around how clever her writing is.
The world that Sarah has created in this series is genuinely the most unique I’ve ever read, & I can’t think of a single book that even slightly compares to these ones. I adore how readers continue to learn new things about the magic system, the universe & the characters, despite feeling like we have all the information we could possibly need or want. The world-building is rich, beautiful & intelligent, & the multi-layered characters leave your mind reeling.
I’m genuinely obsessed with this series & I hate that it’s not more well-known, because it bloody well deserves to be. Please, please, please grab yourself copies of the books so that you can be as in love with them as I am. This series deserves to go global.
