Down the TBR Hole #5

Down the TBR Hole

Down The TBR Hole is a meme set up by Lia at LostInAStory & involves deciding whether to keep or remove certain books from your TBR list. The meme works by going to your GoodReads to-read shelf, selecting “ascending” on date added, taking the first 5 (or how many you would like) books, reading their synopsis & then deciding whether to keep them on your TBR or to get rid of them. I’ll be doing this meme using my to-buy list, as my to-read list only includes books that I already own; after my fourth go at Down The TBR Hole I had 274 books on my to-buy list, I now have 301 – ah fuck. I suck so bad at this so I’m going to do 10 books from now on, rather than 6…

I’m keeping The Girl With The Red Balloon because it’s a book that I want to read today as much as I did the first time I heard about it; it’s one that I can’t believe I still don’t own to be honest, because it’s everything I love.

I’m also keeping The Girl From Everywhere because the story sounds really original & I don’t think I’ve ever read a bad review of it either.

If you know anything about me then you’ll know I’m keeping Escape from Camp 14; learning about North Korea & raising awareness of how the people who live there are treated is very important to me so there’s no way this is being taken off of my to-buy list.

I’m removing Forest of a Thousand Lanterns from my to-buy list as the story just doesn’t appeal to me anymore – I’ve kind of got bored of kings/queens/emperors/empresses/etc. & this book also has a twisted love story in it as well so I just can’t be bothered with it.

I shouldn’t need to explain why I’m keeping Dear Martin.

🐺

Down the TBR Hole synopsis.pngI’m removing Dualed from my to-buy because, although it sounds interesting, it’s part of a series & that means adding another book to my to-buy list when I finish reading this one & that’s kind of counterproductive so 🤷‍♀️

I’m keeping White Rabbit Society Part Two because I really enjoyed Part One; it was utterly bonkers & totally original.

The fact that I’m actually going to remove Last Star Burning from my to-buy list is kinda’ a big deal for me, because at one point this was the book I wanted most in the world… but, looking at the synopsis now it just doesn’t grab me as much so I’m guessing the hype must have got to me… plus, it’s another book that starts a series & I’ve already said why I’m avoiding those right now…

Making a decision about The Lady of Misrule was difficult because I love this era of history, as y’all should know, but after looking at the reviews for this book I decided to remove this because I wasn’t impressed by the ratio of good to bad.

The only reason The Elephant Vanishes was on my to-buy list was because every time I say I’m interested in East-Asia people ask me if I’ve read one of Murakami’s books – no I haven’t read one & none of them interest me that much, so I’m just going to remove this now, okay?

🐺

So, out of 10 books I got rid of 5, which I think is pretty good going! I started this post with 301 books on my to-buy list & I now have 296! Which is still awful, I know…

I’m going to continue doing 10 books per post now to see if I can get rid of more faster, & do you like the new way I’ve set this out? I don’t care if you don’t because it’s hella’ easier for me but I thought I’d ask to be polite 🤷‍♀️ Have you read any of the books featured? Would you recommend any that I’ve removed? Let me know!

  1. Ooh, now this is a really clever idea, I like it a lot! I haven’t read any books on the list, but I relate to the feels of having a “to buy” and “to read” list that’s out of control…?
