This tag was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm & was revived on Taking on a World of Words – I got the idea from Katie Judges Books; WWW Wednesdays involves answering three simple questions:
1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you’ll read next?
What Are You Currently Reading?
One of the books I’m currently reading is The Hollow Girl by Hillary Monahan; I’m just over half way through & I’m really enjoying it. The Hollow Girl is about a young Romani girl called Bethan who is raped by a boy from her clan, whilst four of his friends stand by & watch. Although the incident itself happens “off-screen”, I read the build up & after effects of the attack last night & it was heart-shattering. I’m really looking forward to getting back into this book as I know the book continues with Bethan getting revenge on her attackers, but as well as this the book is teaching me a lot about Romani culture & when it’s released I’m hoping it’ll help to dispel some of the prejudice.
The other book I’m currently reading is The Extinction Trials by S. M. Wilson – I only started reading it today, before my job interview, so I can’t say much about it, but so far I’m really enjoying it. Some of you may know that the only ARC I wanted to get my hands on at this year’s YALC was The Extinction Trials, but due to the nature of the competition to get one I wasn’t able to acquire one… that’s why, when it arrived in the post a couple of days ago, I nearly cried. I’m so excited to get deeper into the story & I’m really hoping it lives up to my expectations.
What Did You Recently Finish Reading?
I recently finished reading The Five Daughters of the Moon by Leena Likitalo; it’s story based on what happened to the Romanov daughters in the early 1900s but with a fantasy twist. I absolutely loved reading this, & knowing the sequel comes out on my birthday has got me even more excited about continuing to read the story. It had totally original world-building & the five sisters were all really different from each other, & they definitely echoed the people they’ve been based on.
I also recently finished reading A Dance With Dragons (Part Two of Book Five) by George RR Martin! I am devastated. Quite a lot happened in the book & I really got into the story, so knowing that I can’t read the next book yet is so painful. A Dance With Dragons came out in 2012 so goodness knows how long it’ll be before The Winds of Winter will be released – George RR Martin has promised at least one book in 2018 based in Westeros but he hasn’t confirmed that it’ll be The Winds of Winter, it could be a novella or something instead *sobs uncontrollably*.
What Do You Think You’ll Read Next?
The next book on my NetGalley ARC reading list is Chengli & the Silk Road Caravan by Hildi Kang, which is about an orphan boy in 630AD, who joins the caravan to travel down The Silk Road. Chengli is a middle-grade book & as I recently tweeted, good middle-grade books get me very excited! It’s also set in historical Asia so I’m absolutely buzzing to read it. I’m sure I’ll end up buying myself a print copy of it when it’s released – ha! I’ve not even read it yet & I’m in love with it.
Scholastic UK also recently sent me the Foxcraft series by Inbali Iserles, which I really want to get my teeth into! It has magical foxes! So I’m hoping to start the series soon, especially considering the final book has only just been released.
